I have been in weekly sessions with Paula for the last 18 months and she has helped me find a level of self worth and a clarity of thinking that has helped me enormously. From my first session with her I felt completely at ease and supported. She has a very empathic, warm yet professional approach. I could feel I was making progress each week and I now look back and see just how much positive and lasting change has been achieved thanks to her wisdom and compassionate guidance. She remembers everything I have told her and whenever past pain inevitably comes up I have always felt safely supported as she helps me through the emotions, processing them in ways I’d never been able to before. I am so grateful I found Paula on BetterHelp and would highly recommend her without hesitation.

UK Counsellor | Psychodynamic & Integrative Therapy | Emotional Wellbeing, Relationships and mental health issues.

I am a UK-based psychodynamic counsellor and qualified teacher with around 10 years of experience across counselling services, education, and private practice. Over this time, I have worked alongside adults navigating anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, family stress, and periods of change or uncertainty.

Many people I work with feel as though they are holding a lot internally — appearing “fine” on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally exhausted underneath. Therapy can be a space to put that down and begin to understand it differently.

My approach is warm, steady, and collaborative. I offer a calm, non-judgmental space where you can speak freely, feel emotionally held, and begin to make sense of patterns that may feel hard to shift alone.

As a psychodynamic counsellor, I pay attention to how earlier experiences and relational patterns can continue to shape how we think, feel, and respond in the present. Alongside this, I draw on integrative approaches, including person-centred and solution-focused work, to keep therapy responsive and grounded in what feels most helpful for you.

You do not need to have clear goals, language, or certainty before starting. Often, the process of being heard and understood is what allows clarity and change to begin to emerge.

If you are feeling ready for a space where things can be explored gently, at your pace, and with care, I would be glad to support you.

Online counseling allows you to receive care from a mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Starting at $65 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.

I have rejected therapy for so long, for fear that it will feel like more pressure in my already busy life, and for fear that i will be talking to someone who will tell me what i already know. After surfing 4 different therapists in different virtual and face to face spaces, I found Paula! Although i have not been in therapy with her for as long as i want to be, i could immediate sense that i am a step closer to where i want to be. Her approach works for me, and her personality and experience are the promise from therapy that i have been seeking. She is focused, hands on, knowledgeable, deep, and experienced beyond my expectations. I told Paula that i have friends to vent to, and i have minimal self-awareness, and i do not need someone to tell me what i already know. She opens my eyes and ears and heart to so much that i am not aware of and that i do not know, and she teaches me so much. I continue to learn so much from her. I can finally say that against my expectations i found my therapist.

The change in my relationships with my family, friendships and my work life has been so substantially improved since I’ve been working with Paula. She has a great warmth, is calm, gentle, giving insightful guidance, and offering new perspectives and practical solutions, (not just listening with occasional questions which had been my past therapy experience that had put me off returning to therapy for decades.) She remembers and references everything that I have ever talked about in a way that makes me feel truly listened to and understood. She also has a great sense of humour and fun which can lift the spirits invaluably where appropriate. I just wish I’d found her decades ago.

In the first session Paula helped me piece together elements of my past and provided new understanding that really resonated and provided healing. Thank you for your expertise and kindness.

Paula is friendly and openly, making it easier to work with her. She is good to reflect things I write in my journal helping me to understand my needs better. Worksheets given help me to reflect and think in new ways.

I have so much to thank Paula for. I had tried therapy in the past but never received the level of insight, guidance and understanding Paula has given me. She has the most reassuring, compassionate manner and a great sense of humour which has frequently helped lighten perspectives on frustrating relationships. I feel she always remembers everything and everyone I’ve talked about and is genuinely engaged and incredibly perceptive about my situation. I have developed a huge tool kit to move forward with and a key understanding of self care and compassion and feel in a very different and positive position after 10 months of weekly phone sessions with Paula. I am just so grateful to have been able to connect with her via BetterHelp as geographically I would never have been in contact with her. I’ve also loved the ease of not having to travel to the session and just be in the safety of my own home one of the things that got in the way of continuing therapy in the past was the commute to and from the session especially as often you come out drained and emotional. So being at home for me has been a real positive of using BetterHelp.

I have learnt so much and progressed so far with Paula in such a short time she has been extraordinary and I can’t thank her enough for her wisdom compassion and help. I have tried many therapists before finding BetterHelp and the phone calls rather than in person sessions really suit me. Paula is my second therapist through BetterHelp and the difference in terms of how she works with me and our compatibility has resulted in immediate improvement in my mood and understanding of my mental health so if you at first don’t find a compatible connection what is so good about BetterHelp is how easy it is to find another therapist. I would highly recommend Paula Smyton and will always be so grateful to her for giving me a new lease of life.

I am hugely grateful to Paula who is so supportive, insightful and approaches everything with a caring but professional manner. I have learned so much from her in the 5 sessions we have had and already can see so many positive changes happening in my relationship with myself and others. Paula has an intuitive understanding of where I am at and has created the rapport necessary that I feel able to open up safely. Also her comprehensive knowledge of theoretical and practical approaches means she has not only given suggestions of pertinent reading material to help me understand what has formed me but also songs and other influences to help me recover and heal on my self care journey. I feel so lucky to have at last been able to find someone who can help me fully in this way.
