I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've experienced. I will do my best to help you work through some of these issues so you can get on with having a fulfilling happy life. I know that probably sounds impossible right now.
I realize you may have some anxiety starting with a new therapist and trying to figure out the Better Help process. I'll do my best to be here to walk you through step by step.
I've been working in the field as a professional therapist for right at a decade now. I have a Masters Degree in Counseling and have completed the requirements for professional licensure in West Virginia and currently in the process of being licensed in Virginia. Areas of specialization include working with the LGBTQIA community that I myself am a member of, gender identity issues and sexuality ,all types of relationship issues including infidelity and with consensual non-monogamy, self love/self development, mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Grief and shame are also two more areas that I've found have been of interest to many of my clients. I believe that EVERYONE deserves quality therapy, and that can sometimes be hard to find in WV for members of marginalized communities.
I believe that you the client are the expert of your life. My job is to walk alongside you and help you to sort things out. I do not believe in telling clients what to do or giving them answers, but will help guide them to find their own way. I practice from a CBT/Humanistic framework, but will bring in other therapeutic approaches if it is deemed
they would work better with the client. I also believe that therapy does not occur only when therapist and client are interacting. To keep the client engaged between session and to give them opportunities to try out the skills learned in session, between-session work will be given as appropriate.
Sessions are ~45 minutes long, and our first session will be a "get to know you" type of session where I tell you about myself (education, experience, orientation) and give you opportunity to ask any questions you might have. You will also be asked to tell me a little about yourself and your situation including what brought you to seek treatment.
One of the first things that I do with clients after the initial intake session is a goals sheet. It has 9 different subsection categories including relationship goals, professional goals, educational goals, health/fitness goals, etc. I find that it really helps clients hone in on what they want to accomplish during their time in therapy. If it sounds ok with you, we will start there after our initial get to know you/paperwork session.
1. Professional goals (career, job, livelihood)
2. Physical Goals (body, health, weight, eating/exercising)
3. Relationship goals (with family, friends, and romantic relationships)
4. Financial goals (money you'd like to save, financial habits, etc)
5. Emotional/Mental health goals (e.g. better communication, increase self esteem, coping skills)
6. Spiritual goals (connection, practice, meditation, etc)
7. Experiences/Hobbies goals (travel, bucket list)
8. Educational goals (take a class, start/finish a certificate or degree)
9. Philanthropic goals (giving back, volunteering, helping others)
I hope this gives you a good idea that I pay a lot of attention to client goals. We will complete a goal sheet about every 6 months so I can make sure Im structuring therapy in the way that will best help you and to see if there are goals you have completed in that time or new ones you'd like to add!
Feel free to look at my availability for next week and schedule a spot that will be most convenient for you.
I look forward to talking with you!

It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Starting at $65 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
